Malaysia Current Account Surplus Jumps in Q2
Malaysia’s current account surplus widened to MYR 14.26 billion in the second quarter of 2019 from MYR 2.80 billion in the same period the preceding year, as the goods surplus increased to MYR 28.10 billion from MYR 25.92 billion. In addition, the services deficit narrowed to MYR 3.44 billion from MYR 5.57 billion a year ago and the primary income gap decreased to MYR 5.54 billion from MYR 12.75 billion. The secondary income gap was little-changed at MYR 4.87 billion.

Malaysia Q1 Current Account Surplus Largest in 5 Years
Malaysia’s current account surplus rose to MYR 16.39 billion in the three months to March 2019 from MYR 13.61 billion in the same period the preceding year. This was the largest current account surplus since the first quarter 2014, when the figure was at MYR 19.82 billion. In the March quarter, the surplus of good account declined slightly to 33.85 billion from MYR 34.16 billion a year ago. At the same time, the gap of services account narrowed sharply to MYR 1.84 billion from MYR 5.51 billion, while the deficit of primary income was little-changed MYR 10.12 billion from MYR 10.21 billion. Meantime, the gap of secondary income widened to MYR 5.51 billion from MYR 4.64 billion a year earlier. In 2018, the current account surplus was at MYR 35.77 billion, down from a surplus of MYR 40.28 billion in the prior year.

Malaysia Q4 Current Account Surplus Narrows
Malaysia’s current account surplus narrowed to MYR 10.83 billion in the fourth quarter of 2018 from MYR 13.92 billion in the same period of the previous year. The goods surplus decreased to MYR 33.03 billion from MYR 34.06 billion a year ago. In addition, the deficit of both primary (MYR 12.93 billion from MYR 8.41 billion) and secondary income (4.93 billion from MYR 4.76 billion) widened. Meanwhile, the services account gap narrowed to MYR 4.34 billion from MYR 6.97 billion a year earlier. Considering 2018 as a whole, the current account surplus declined to MYR 35.77 billion from MYR 40.28 billion in 2017.
