South Africa Retail Sales Growth at 7-Month Low
South Africa's retail sales increased 0.3 percent year-on-year in October 2019, following an upwardly revised 0.4 percent rise in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 0.6 percent gain. It was the slowest rise in retail activity since March, as sales advanced much less for all other retailers (0.2 percent vs 1.6 percent in September) while declined for pharmaceuticals and medical goods, cosmetics & toiletries (-0.6 percent vs 0.8 percent); textiles, clothing, footwear & leather goods (-0.6 percent vs 2.9 percent) and hardware, paint & glass (-2.5 percent vs 0.3 percent). In contrast, main gains were recorded for food, beverages & tobacco (4.5 percent vs -1.9 percent); household furniture, appliances & equipment (3.2 percent vs 1.6 percent) and general dealers (0.4 percent vs -0.6 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales went down 0.2 percent, after an upwardly revised 0.6 percent rise in the previous month.

South Africa Retail Trade Growth at 9-Month Low
South Africa's retail sales increased 0.2 percent year-on-year in September 2019, easing significantly from a downwardly revised 1.0 percent rise and missing market expectations of a 1.9 percent gain. It was the smallest increase in retail trade since last December, led by household furniture, appliances & equipment (0.1 percent vs 4.4 percent in August) and all other retailers (1.3 percent vs 3.6 percent). In addition, sales declined for food, beverages and tobacco (-2.3 percent vs 1.5 percent) and general dealers (-0.7 percent vs 0.4 percent). Conversely, those of textiles, clothing, footwear & leather goods (3 percent vs 0.9 percent) and pharmaceuticals and medical goods, cosmetics & toiletries (0.8 percent vs 0.6 percent) advanced faster. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade went up 0.5 percent, recovering from an upwardly revised 1.1 percent decline in the prior month.

South Africa's retail trade increased 1.1 percent year-on-year in August 2019, slowing from a 2.0 percent rise in the prior month and missing market expectations of a 1.5 percent gain. It was the smallest increase in retail trade since March, as sales rose less for all other retailers (3.8 percent vs 8.0 percent in July); textiles, clothing, footwear & leather goods (0.9 percent vs 3.0 percent) and pharmaceuticals and medical goods, cosmetics & toiletries (0.4 percent vs 3.7 percent). In addition, those of hardware, paint and glass declined (-1 percent vs -1.3 percent). Meanwhile, sales grew faster for food, beverages & tobacco (0.9 percent vs 0.6 percent); household furniture, appliances & equipment (4.5 percent vs 3.6 percent) and general dealers (0.5 percent vs 0.2 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade shrank 0.9 percent, after increasing 0.2 percent in the previous month.

South Africa's retail trade increased 2.0 percent year-on-year in July 2019, easing from a 2.4 percent rise in the prior month and missing market expectations of a 2.6 percent gain. Sales advanced at a slower pace for food, beverages & tobacco (0.8 percent vs 2.2 percent in June); textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (3.2 percent vs 4.2 percent); household furniture, appliances & equipment (3.2 percent vs 5.6 percent) and general dealers (0.1 percent vs 1.0 percent). Also, lower sales were recorded for hardware, paint & glass (-1.7 percent vs -1.6 percent). Meanwhile, those of pharmaceuticals and medical goods, cosmetics & toiletries (3.7 percent vs 1.9 percent) advanced further. On a seasonally adjusted basis, retail sales went up 0.2 percent, after an upwardly revised 0.7 percent increase in the prior month.

South Africa's retail trade went up 2.4 percent year-on-year in June 2019, after an upwardly revised 2.3 percent growth in the previous month and slightly above market expectations of a 2.3 percent rise. The largest annual increases were recorded for: other retailers (5.7 percent vs -1.4 percent in May); household furniture, appliances and equipment (5.2 percent vs 2.9 percent) and textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (4.8 percent vs 1.3 percent). In contrast, sales decreased for hardware, paint & glass (-0.7 percent vs 0.3 percent) and food, beverages & tobacco (-0.1 percent vs 2.3 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales went up 0.3 percent, following a 0.1 percent increase in the prior month.

South Africa's retail trade rose 2.2 percent year-on-year in May 2019, following an upwardly revised 2.7 percent growth in the previous month and beating market expectations of 1.6 percent. The largest annual increases were recorded for: general dealers (4 percent vs 1.8 percent); retailers in household furniture, appliances and equipment (3.2 percent vs 5.8 percent); retailers in pharmaceuticals and medical goods, cosmetics and toiletries (2.9 percent vs 5.1 percent); and retailers in food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (2.7 percent vs 0.1 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales edged up 0.1 percent in May, easing from a 1 percent increase in April.
